At work

Rich began his career in financial advice at the age of 17 in 2001, quickly setting his sights on becoming a financial planner. With more than 20 years of experience in the industry, he now specialises in helping individuals, families, and small business owners build financial plans that support both their immediate needs and longer-term aspirations.

Much of Rich’s work focuses on clients who are planning for retirement or are in the early years of enjoying it. Among them are professionals from a wide range of backgrounds, including several British Airways airline pilots, as well as people with varied and interesting careers.

Two of his proudest moments in his professional life have been achieving Chartered Financial Planner status and founding Betterment Wealth. For him, the most rewarding part of the job remains the same: listening to clients’ stories, creating tailored financial plans, and seeing the real-world impact of good advice.

At home

Outside of work, Rich enjoys playing (admittedly average) golf, road cycling – sometimes taking on mountain routes – and spending time with his family.

He lives with his fiancée Annie, their son, and two daughters, just a short walk from Brancaster Beach on the north Norfolk coast.

Much of their free time is spent enjoying family walks on the beach, playing golf at the local links course, or cycling through the open countryside and along the coastline.

    Qualifications

    Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning

    This qualification enables professional advisers to develop specialist planning capabilities, covering topics such as: personal tax and trust, business financial, pension and investment planning.

    Diploma in Financial Planning

    This level 4 diploma meets the FCA’s qualification requirements for retail investment advisers, demonstrating core technical knowledge and financial planning capabilities across six core areas.

    Financial Planning Certificate

    A recognition offered by the Chartered Insurance Institute in the United Kingdom. Individuals who hold this qualification have satisfied coursework and testing requirements set by the organisation.

    Cert CII (ER) Certificate in Equity Release

    The Level 3 Certificate in Equity Release meets the FCA’s requirement for mortgage advisers and those advising on equity release schemes. In addition to developing advisory skills, the Certificate offers an understanding of equity release regulation, products, market practice, and customer needs.

    Cert CII (MP) Certificate in Mortgage Advice

    The Level 3 Certificate in Mortgage Advice meets the FCA’s qualification requirements for mortgage advisers. It develops an understanding of the sector and the mortgage process, enabling advisers to meet individual client needs.

    AFI Personal Tax and Trust Planning

    This examination assesses the candidate to develop in depth financial planning skills related to personal tax and trusts.

    AF3 Pension Planning

    This examination assesses the candidate to develop in depth financial planning skills related to personal and corporate pensions.

    AF4 Investment Planning

    This examination assesses the candidate to develop in depth financial planning skills related to investments and the management of investment portfolios.

    AF5 Financial Planning Process

    This examination assesses the candidate to develop an understanding of the financial planning process when giving advice to clients.

    J01 Personal Tax

    At the end of this unit, candidates should be able to demonstrate an understanding of: the basic structure of the tax system and self-assessment; the main taxes on income and capital that may be charged on individuals, the self-assessment system and how tax liabilities are computed; impact of residence and domicile on an individual’s liability to UK tax.

    J05 Pension Income Options

    At the end of this unit, candidates should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the: process of decumulating pension funds and the main issues for clients and advisers; main choices facing members of pensions schemes during decumulation; features, risks and tax treatment of the secured pension option; features, risks and tax treatment of the unsecured pension option; features, risks and tax treatment of phased retirement; features, risks and tax treatment of the alternatively secured pension option.

    MAQ Mortgage Advice Qualification

    This qualification assesses the knowledge and understanding of the UK regulation environment in the financial services industry, together with types of mortgage products and repayment options and the giving of mortgage advice.

    R01 Financial Services, Regulation and Ethics

    This qualification assesses a knowledge and understanding of the financial services industry, including regulation, legislation and the Code of Ethics.

    R02 Investment Principles and Risk

    This qualification assesses a knowledge and understanding of investment products and the application of the investment advice process.

    CF7 Lifetime Mortgage Activities

    This qualification assesses a knowledge and understanding of the UK regulation environment in the financial services industry, lifetime mortgage products, repayment options and the giving of mortgage advice.

    FP1 Financial Services and their Regulation

    Assesses an understanding of the financial services industry, including regulation and legislation.

    FP2 Protection, Savings, and Investment

    Assesses an understanding of protection, savings and investment products.

    FP3 Identifying and Satisfying Client Needs

    Assesses an understanding of conducting a fact-find, assessing the client’s needs, and recommending specific (appropriate) financial products to meet those needs.

    HR1 Home Reversion Plans

    This examination assesses a knowledge and understanding of the legislative and regulatory position of home reversion plans and their place in the advice process.

    Accreditations

    Chartered Financial Planner

    Chartered status is awarded by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and is considered the ‘gold standard’ financial planning accreditation. Chartered status is a symbol of technical competence and signifies a public commitment to upholding professional standards and adhering to a professional Code of Ethics.
